What is micro suction?
Micro suction is the safest way of removing ear wax.
It is performed with a fine probe which is inserted in the ear. The probe is hollow and acts as a tiny hoover which suctioning the wax.
The audiologist is constantly looking into the ear the whole procedure through a magnified otoscope.
With the knowledge of the anatomy of the ear are care is taken that nothing is touched other than the wax safely and efficiently removing the wax.
Once the wax is removed as before the procedure the ear is examined giving a detailed explanation of the condition of the ear.
If there is any concerns this will be explained and if necessary a referral will be made to the GP.
It is always advisable to use olive oil for 3-5 days. This will loosen the wax away from the canal wall and make it more comfortable to be removed.
I do advise that only olive oil or almond oil should be used to soften the wax, as they are gentle to the canal and eardrum rather than anything that contain hydrogen peroxide or bicarbonate of soda as they are very unkind to the ear and can cause irritation, in some cases infection.
To reassure visiting patient’s the room is sanitised between patients and anything that is used on patients is all single use and sterile and discarded after use.
